Annapolis News

Mayor Moyer, with full support of the city council, has introduced a resolution that would allow for eminent domain to reclaim Annapolis Market House for the benefit of the city (and citizens).
Other legislation introduced includes:

Making the spraying of grafitti a misdemeanor.
Grant temporary parking permits to medical caregivers providing services to residents located in restricted parking [...]

How the Banks Are Posting Profits

It sure seemed fishy to me that banks are suddenly declaring profitable quarters after being on the brink of collapse just a few months ago.
Here’s how they are doing it:
Goldman Sachs, which is posting a $1.81 billion profit for the first quarter is in a rush to repay bailout funds.  To most, this would appear [...]

Failed Contracts Resolution?

The city is getting $5 million from J.G. Garcete Construction Co. of Bladensburg, who did a shoddy job renovating the Annapolis Police Department building on Taylor Avenue.  The city is also going to pursue two subcontractors.
Also, the city claims they are closer to resolving the Market House issue.  The city hopes to reclaim Market House [...]

No Energy Re-Regulation in Maryland

Governor O’Malley threw his support behind a bill that would have re-regulated Maryland energy markets.
That bill has been defeated in committee.
The House Economic Matters Committee voted 21-2 against the bill.  Members of the legislature had previously complained that they did not have enough time to review the bill and cited that as a reason [...]

No Resolution to BGE Shutoffs

Yesterday, the PSC had their follow-up meeting with state utilities about shutoffs for non-paying accounts.
The proposal put forth by the utilities during yesterday’s meeting was to allow customers to catch-up on past due accounts, interest free, so long as they are caught up by next winter, when energy bills are expected to increase again.
The Baltimore [...]

BRAC Addition: Naval Academy to Relocate

To stimulate the economy, Congress slipped a piece of legislation into the budget that will relocate the Naval Academy to Boise, Idaho.  Support for the move is strong and hill staffers are saying that one way or another, the legislation will be passed.
The move will take place in 2012.
With the stalled economy and housing market, [...]

Schaefer Fans: Catch Documentary Tonight

MPT will be airing a documentary tonight about the life and career of William Donald Schaefer.
The legandary Schaefer has been a councilman, big city mayor, two-term governor and comptroller.
The documentary is called “Citizen Schaefer” and airs at 9:00 PM on Maryland Public Television.

Maryland Hospital Bill Passes House of Delegates

A bill I support is moving along, having been passed by the House of Delegates.
If the bill is signed into law, low-income Maryland patients (approximately $33,000 income for a family of four) who lack health insurance would be guaranteed free care at Maryland hospitals.
The bill would require that hospitals develop a financial assistance policy [...]

Medicaid Fraud OK in Maryland!

Although I find it hard to side with Governor O’Malley on many things, one bill before the legislature that was introduced by him to investigate and recover damages from those who commit Medicaid fraud failed to get enough support.
The lobbyists for hospitals, doctors, pharmaceutical companies and others were able to kill the bill.
The bill, modeled [...]

Possible Cuts in Anne Arundel County Public Schools

AA Co. teachers are upset — and rightfully so.  In fact, more than 800 showed up to protest proposed cuts in lesson planning time, reductions in staff and larger class sizes.
The protest was started on Riva Road and then moved in one the school board meeting.
