KFC at 1972 West Street, Annapolis Gets a Big Thumbs Down

A friend and I decided to take Oprah up on her offer.  We headed okfc1ut to KFC at 1972 West Street in Annapolis, MD.  Even walked in the rain — only 3/4 of a mile, but it was raining.

We get there and a woman in front of us is redeeming a coupon for a free grilled chicken sandwich.  Her coupon, however, was not “Oprah’s coupon” and they accepted it.

Then, when it became our turn, they told us that that they were no longer accepting the “Oprah coupons” for the night.  I complained but got nowhere.

The not-so-bright cashier tried to show me that the coupon said “managers choice.”  I politely informed him that the sentence, the way worded, meant that the manager had discretion as to which parts of the chicken the customer received.

Then he pointed out “at participating restaurants” on the coupon.  I informed him that it was a participating restaurant.

The coupon did not say “subject to the manager’s whim.”  The location we went to met the only criteria stated on the coupon.

I decided to call corporate headquarters when I got home.  The line was busy.

The first day of the promotion isn’t even over yet and I’ve already read complaints all over the Internet.

I would not be complaining had they run out of grilled chicken.  Or if they were not a participating restaurant.  They had the chicken and are participating.

The manager just decided that they were not accepting anymore coupons today.  That is wrong and a poor business practice.

Hey KFC … next time you think up a crazy promotion make sure you can honor it for more than 10 hours!

We also had to walk back home in the rain.  Without food.

Question: How do you know that restaurant was “participating”? KFC is a franchise, which means a lot of their stores are owned by regular people. When the chain organizes a promotion, then, they realize that some of these owners won’t want to take part. They say “participating locations only,” and then you go to the location nearest you to find out they’re not “participating.”

Quiznos recently had a free-sandwich deal with that same small print, and I went to four Quiznos only discover NONE OF THEM were participating. Which is their right, you know, but it leaves potential customers saying they’d rather starve then buy food from those a*holes.

In this case, it seems that your KFC isn’t participating. In which case you’re stuck. Sorry. I highly recommend boycotting chains that do crap like this, because they shouldn’t be allowed to advertise fabulous that aren’t actually available anywhere.

  3. manhattanman:

Well, he could tell that it was a “participating restaurant” when the manager told him they weren’t accepting “anymore” coupons.. meaning they had accepted some before.. thereby indicating that they were, indeed, a participating restaurant..

  4. DJ:

Have you ever heard of something called “Personal Responsibility”?
(Or, let me guess, you’re a Democrat?)

Let me explain, #1 You chose to walk to the restaurant in the rain.

Therefore, we don’t feel sorry for you.

#2 KFC would have gladly accepted your money. You mentioned “home” and you obviously have computer, so you must have some money. You could have chosen to buy a meal.

Thus, once again we don’t feel sorry for you because you missed lunch.

Your story suggests an “entitlement mentality”. You actually feel wronged because someone didn’t give you something for free.

My advice is forget the coupons. Work harder, make more money and buy your own dang lunches. If you manage to make lots of money (and you very well could!) you’ll even start voting for people and policies which allow you to keep more of what you’ve earned.

So, there you have it: The key to success and happiness is choosing to quit blaming others for your petty problems, take responsibility, work hard, get ahead and worry about important things like preventing the government from confiscating the fruits of your labor.

You might even decide to buy that KFC restaurant one day. If you put your mind to it, you could.

If, however, you choose not to take advantage of your opportunities, you’ll likely waste your years away complaining about “life’s injustices”. And once again, we will not feel sorry for you. After all, it will have been your choice.

    Yours Truly, The Real World

  5. Stan:

Question: How do you know that restaurant was “participating”?

Because there is a downloadable list in PDF form on the coupon website. Any more questions?

  6. Duh:

I would never eat at KFC, but I found this whole Oprah “free coupon” story to be interesting enough to follow a link to this blog. What’s ironic is Oprah is promoting a product that is junk food (while certainly better than the fried product, this grilled product is filled with MSG, antibiotics, and all kinds of other junk, and of course horribly mass produced chicken… but I digress)

KFC made several big mistakes with this promotion.

    1. using Coupons.com for the coupon instead of collecting e-mail addresses and sending a unique coupon to each e-mail (like the airlines e-tickets, or ordering concert tickets online, and how most other restaurants I’ve seen do it). So many technical problems were reported with this process, and I tried just for giggles and had nothing but problems so I didn’t bother trying too hard.

    2. they should have been very clear with the franchisees that were participating that the coupons MUST be accepted (don’t worry, they get reimbursed by YUM, so it doesn’t come out of the manager’s pocket).

    3. the franchise should have been fully stocked and ready for a promotion of this magnitude. We’re talking about Oprah here for goodness sakes. Expect to handle hundreds if not thousands of additional customers during the course of the promotion.

    4. I’m not a fan of KFC or commercial chicken torture, but am a fan of free. KFC should have figured out there would be massive problems with offering a free lunch on Oprah and then not being prepared to redeem it.

By the way, check with the competition. Competitor restaurants ARE accepted these coupons when KFC won’t.

GOod luck with getting them to honor it after the fact.

  7. Don Riddle:

Oh no, they didn’t accept your coupon and you had to walk home starving in the pouring rain.. Next time just buy chicken at regular price and stop whining. Wow.

It’s a freaking fast food restaurant and a coupon. This isn’t a holy cause people. Let it go and stop being so righteous about every tiny injustice in your life.

  8. jer:

sorry, but dj is an idiot. had to be said. everyone was thinking it!

  9. Jim Spaza:

D.J. is absolutely correct. There are so many people in America who think it is their right to get something for nothing and make other people pay for it. Take a look at the recent election of Obama for president. He promised a ton for nothing…and a very slim majority voted for change…someone else’s change.

See, here is the inherent issue at play. Does anyone have the right to make others give them anything for free? Some people say yes. Those people tend to vote for Democrats and tend to be politically and religiously liberal in their beliefs.

Is it bad business practice for KFC to not honor coupons after advertising in such a way? Sure. Don’t like it? Then don’t do business there.

No one got hurt. No one is entitled to damages…because no one PAID anything. Get over it. I know that you leftists and communist sympathizers got your panties in a wad and had your feelings hurt. Tough. Deal with it.

Oh, and get a job and pay for things yourself next time, you lazy entitlement bums.

  10. Bobo:

I second what Jim Spaza says. Anyone who goes to that much effort to get a couple pieces of free food has way too much time on their hands.

The stuff isn’t that expensive to begin with, so getting it free is no big deal.

And if you think your “rights” were damaged, you’re an idiot.

  11. Chris:

Sorry, it had to be said – jer must be a democrat. We were all thinking it, now I’ve said it.

  12. Chris:

And the time it took this woman to blog about this injustice, she could have baked a chicken. What is wrong with people these days?!?!?

  13. train1073:

The true condition is confirmed when DJ above makes a statement that is so true and jer comes along and calls him a jerk. The sad thing about it is that when a society begins it’s decline truth is reversed. It’s called the big lie. It is disappointing to see how many of our “citizens” do not have any insight to see this. Lastly, if you think America is not declining you are more blind then I first thought.

  14. SpenderH:

Oy. I’m all for personal responsibility, but that is totally not germane to this conversation. He had a coupon for food which the company should have been prepared to honor. He wasn’t going to spend money at the restaurant (and neither would I after their behavior) so he walked home without food. He didn’t call a lawyer or 911 as some people have done in recent months. He just wrote an entry in his blog that he gave them a thumbs down. If you had a valid, unrestricted coupon for $700 off a big screen TV at Best Buy and they refused to honor it just because a dozen other people had already redeemed similar coupons you’d be disappointed too.

  15. FUK_DJ:

To DJ, Spazza and morons of the like. Stop reaching and making this into something it is not. You mentioned something about taking advantage of your opportunities (among other garbage)….KFC offered a free meal, that is an opportunity to save yourself a few bucks (who doesn’t try to save a few bucks?!), people are trying to take advantage of this opportunity. The issue here is KFC is backing out by not honoring or putting people in seperate lines, etc. This has nothing to with the “key to happiness” or “getting a better job”, freekin nitwits.

  16. PolitiPornster:

@DJ – WTF? You and these other morons on here are making the KFC debacle political? Why?

KFC offered, through Oprah, a free sample of its new grilled chicken. That offer wasn’t honored in some instances. That’s it. This had nothing to do with being a Democrat or Republican. You Limbaugh listening, FOX watching douche bags are really reaching here.

Just so that this argument can end once and for all, let’s all remember this:

    1. Republican’s LOST in November;

    2. Republican ideas were roundly rejected and LOST in November; and

    3. Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot.

Instead of looking for Democratic boogey man around every corner, why not ask your party to come up with some NEW ideas instead of recycling the old ones.

  17. Shawn:

I loved your article about the KFC coupons. My friend and I had a very similar experience here in New Orleans, Louisiana. NO MORE coupons accepted.

I agree with the comments left by “FUK_DJ.”

Thanks for your “Thumbs Down” article.

  18. joe:

KFC is getting bad press for trying to make a nice offer.
These complainers need to get a life. Maybe these complainers need to get jobs and pay for their own meals. I’m guessing they are use to people picking up all their bills and when they don’t get something free what are they to do. Jesse why did you walk home in the rain hungry? Do you have no money? How did you eat the day before? And the day before that? Are you broke? How do you pay for your internet connection? Quit COMPLAINING!

  19. Jesse Barron:

    Folks,

    1) I am not a democrat. Although I did vote Obama, therefore I must be a Democrat and a socialist.

    2) I am a business owner. As a business owner, it’s all about “customer service.”

These were examples of poor customer service.

Did you read the end about how if it were not a participating restaurant, or had run out of chicken, I wouldn’t have cared?

For the record, I went across the street and ate.

It is the principle of it all. It’s the way the store handled it. It was their poor attitude. It had nothing to do with the free chicken and everything with poor management and customer service.

In fact, if they would have said “we’re not a participating restaurant, or we are out of chicken,” I probably would have ordered a bucket of the original stuff and called it a day.

The free chicken made me leave my house, as it was intended to do. I would have eaten at home otherwise. Once I was already out and had my mind on bad fast food, I wanted it and went to McDonald’s.

The other option was the eat a turkey bagel at home.

    I sometimes like guilty pleasures.

  20. Jesse Barron:

    DUH at 12:25 AM:

You got it! Thank you for understanding! I do like the idea about harvesting email addresses and sending unique coupons. That would have been a great way to build a quality email list and avoid this mess.

Another thing I do not think KFC (or Oprah for that matter) took into consideration is how things go viral on the Internet these days.

Planning for 20 million free meals can quickly turn into 200 million free meals after it hits Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc.

Finally, if you didn’t see the episode and how Oprah hyped it, and you have bad things to say, you should probably go watch the episode first. (that’s not to you, DUH)

We’re in day three and it’s a PR disaster for KFC.

  21. Jesse Barron:

    DJ,

I do not share your jaded view of the world.

I am not “whoa is me.” I am a blogger that is calling attention to poor practices. I ate that night. I paid for my dinner.

I wasn’t dying of starvation and thought KFC was my salvation.

I know that doesn’t fit into your view of the world.

Also, thank you for assuming that I cannot already buy a KFC when you have no idea what my personal finances are.

  22. Jesse Barron:

    Don,

Again, it’s principle and business practices.

Why are so many people advocating that we should not hold corporations accountable?

Isn’t that what got us into this recession in the first place?

Think big picture, folks, big picture. I am.

  23. Jesse Barron:

    Jim,

Nobody would be complaining if the coupon was properly written. How is that the consumers fault?

Had it said “acceptance of all coupons is at the manager’s discretion” nobody would have a right to complain.

You slam Obama, but what you do not realize is that you are advocating that nobody take personal responsibility.

You slam the consumer, but not the company who made up a promotion, broadcasted it on the #1 daytime talk show, through one of the largest celebrities in the world, and then did not live up to the responsibility they created with that promotion.

That is somehow A-OK with you though?

This has NOTHING to do with President Obama.

  24. Jesse Barron:

(people got just as worked up over coupons for free things long before January 20th)

Also, Jim, if you have ever asked for a discount, or have used a coupon to save money or get something for free, then you did exactly what you advocated against.

Are you telling me that you have never accepted a discount in your life? A discount is something for free. When things are on sale you pay full price?

  25. Jesse Barron:

SpenderH, you are my new hero.

    Thanks for “getting it.”

Start comments about how a random commenter being my hero makes me crazy in 3, 2, 1.

I also love the lady that commented I am a woman. She clearly didn’t look at my picture. Or read my name.

It makes me wonder what else she didn’t read.

  26. Jesse Barron:

    FUK_DJ and PolitiPornster:

    Thanks for having common sense!

Isn’t it amazing how many people lack it these days?

  27. Jesse Barron:

    Here is what it is:

They talked to Oprah’s people with big ideas and said “we want to feed America.” They put very basic rules on the coupon. Then, whenever everyone took them up on their offer they decide to change the terms and/or stop accepting them altogether.

That, is a prime example of lacking personal (or in this case, corporate) responsibility.

It has nothing to do with Obama. Or Democrats. Or Socialists. Or poor people. Or hungry people. Or free chicken. It has everything to do with doing what you say you are going to do.

In fact, why are people trying to make the chicken business a political issue? I would bet that these same people advocate a “small government.” If they want that, they should stop inserting the government into every single issue.

  28. jen:

MORONS! GO Jim Spaza, you hit the nail on the head. WAHHH I want something for nothing, it’s the whole US mentality and I am SO flippin tired of it! Grow up, take responsibility for yourselves….

  29. joe:

    ————————–

    - Sounds like you didn’t take the viral thing into consideration!
    - Home all day watching Oprah & clipping coupons…you should get a job so you can afford meals.
    - It’s only a PR disaster because of complainers like you. I’m guessing KFC gave away a lot of free food, just not enough for you.
    - You say you are not a ‘whoooooa is me”, but your whole story is a whoa is me… No free food, got off my couch, got rained on…

  30. FUK_DJ:

Jesse, I am with you – this is about Corporate Responsibility and poor customer service.
Jen #28, have you ever used a coupon or discount? Do you have one of those super market discount club things on your keychain? Do you ever look in the 50%-off rack at the department store? Buy 1 get 1 FREE ring a bell? How dare you, take responsibility for yourself…../sarcasm. There is nothing wrong with redeeming a coupon.
Joe #29, For someone who hates complainers, you sure do a lot of complaining yourself. Jesse has every right to express is dislike for poor customer service and the lack of Responsibility shown by KFC. “Quit COMPLAINING!”

  31. Evan:

    Jesse,

Do you really think the people working at KFC for $7.50/hr care about what their corporate bosses and/or OPRAH offer to the public? These people have to put up with unhappy, rude customers all day, and then have to deal with cheap coupon-toting people demanding free chicken. While it’s their choice to work there and most likely they aren’t our best and brightest, you have to expect them not to give a d@mn. What did you expect? Great customer service from some minimum wage service-industry worker? HAHAHAHA

Rich Oprah and the rich corporate dolts at KFC are responsible for this mess, not the poor fools that work at the stores. KFC will be fine after this. There is no shortage of fat, lazy, cheap people in this country who eat fast food every day.

  32. SpenderH:

Jesse: You must be loco if I am your hero! :)

  33. GoHokies!:

P.S. There is a traffic jam about a quarter mile long for the last hour on a major street in front of my office and it starts at KFC.

  34. jen:

    # 30 – DJ (classy name by the way with the curse word added!!) -
Yes I have redeemed a coupon, I do have a Kroger Plus card, and sure, I love the clearance section at Target, and other stores. Your point is flawed because of the LACK OF COMMON SENSE you and the other whiners are showing. Common sense (what used to be a common thing in our country) is out the window. Common sense says a company will not be able to provide 200 million people with free chicken. Common sense says there just MIGHT be some people out there who print and use that coupon more than once. It reminds me of the robber who sues the woman whose house he is breaking in because he falls through the roof. I think he won, right?? My point is the direction of this country, this attitude of entitlement. No one can see outside their own little chicken problem to look at the real disasters going on around them, and especially in other countries.

  35. dolemite:

Jen – you are a moron, and I’ll tell you why.

This is an example of YUM brands (parent corporation of KFC) LACKING COMMON SENSE, since they had no understanding of the undertaking that this campaign would have. This is particularly demonstrative of a LACK OF COMMON SENSE on the part of YUM, considering the past episodes with Denny’s (whose free food promotion went well), Quizno’s (whose free food promotion went poorly and was widely criticized), El Pollo Loco (whose free food promotion went incredibly well), and Popeye’s (whose discounted food promotion went poorly). Considering those examples, YUM should have thought through what they were attempting to do with this promotion via the coupons.

Further, this is not an example of “entitlement” as you describe. YUM brands strategically decided that for purposes of product marketing, they would offer up free chicken in consideration. Consider the value derived by YUM:
    1) consumers become re-acquainted with the brand and products
    2) consumers seek out the closest KFC locations to their home
    3) word of mouth from consumers to their friends to complete the viral path of the two aforementioned benefits.

In exchange for this value, YUM offers up free chicken. Not everyone was required to participate, nor did everyone participate, including the seemingly financially independent commenters on this page who scoff at those willing to take a free meal.

To conclude: Jen, you are a moron since consumer complaints have nothing to do with a sense of entitlement. YUM brands, via KFC and Oprah made an offer to America. Americans wanted to accept the offer, but were excluded from doing so, due to YUM not planning out this campaign properly. The expectation of free chicken was created by YUM, and not by Americans wanting free chicken. QED, you are a moron.

  36. jen:

    Dole -
You are probably the same person who represented that guy on the roof.. And the million dollar hot coffee spill lawsuit with McDonald’s.

  37. Stephanie:

Jen – You’re showing your ignorance again. You obviously didn’t know that the reason that woman who spilled hot McDonalds coffee won her her case is because McDonalds had an accepted, documented business practice of serving coffee hot enough to burn so that by the time it cooled enough to be drinkable, people wouldn’t want a refill. And she had 3rd degree burns. You definitely come off as a person who listens to a 30 second news clip or reads the headlines of the day on Yahoo and then goes off spouting her opinion like it’s the well researched, gospel truth. Please do your research before you comment again. I think we’d all appreciate it.

  38. Magicfan:

Listen all you idiots. I am a Proud Republican. I don’t like Oprah or Obama all that much. I believe that you are entitled to what you earn and only what you earn. That said, Corporations have a moral and legal responsibility to fulfill promises. If I promise to pay a bill, I can’t tell them later that “Oh, ALL my creditors wanted your money that I promised, so I cannot pay you. Sorry.” KFC has exposed themselves by offering something that NO REASONABLE PERSON could expect to be less than incredible in it’s response. They did not prep the supply chain or the stores. This can put KFC out of business. And it should. Except that they are part of Pepsico, so Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Pepsi and others are in trouble too. Some idiot in marketing needs his/her head handed to them, and they better come up with a solution to fulfill the coupons, or they WILL end up on the evil side of a Class Action. The business world has rules, and they just broke a ton of them. And Oprah better get her $$ out of the country, because she is exposed here as well. Good luck with your free chicken, and DJ is right about the “too bad you had to walk” – maybe you should ask Oprah for a free car…..

  39. Magicfan:

Dolomite – had I taken the time to read your post, I would not have bothered. Thank you.

  40. Magicfan:

Hey Evan. You are the ultimate idiot. “What did you expect? Great customer service from some minimum wage service-industry worker?”

Darn right I do. And until they learn how, they will continue to be “Minimum Wage Service Industry”. Welcome to the big leagues, pal.

  41. Phil G.:

I am an independent and what *I* find funny on here is those who taught “personal responsibility” to anyone whom they think to be democrat. YET, they say absolutely nothing about CORPORATE responsibility.

KFC had a promotion and are failing in various ways to honor their deal. Where is the responsibility there? FALSE ADVERTISING anyone?

Last I checked, that is ILLEGAL. Does the coupon say it has to be printed in color or any other restrictions?

If they are out of supplies the manager should opt to give the customer a rain check for another time when they have adequate supplies.

Either they need to man up and honor their deal or publicly admit they screwed up and take their licks coming their way.

Corporate responsibility: “That which we ARE NOT SEEING when free market & freely traded companies have run their business so far into the red that they have their hands out asking for the tax payer bailout”

Magicfan has it correct: “Some idiot in marketing needs his/her head handed to them…”

I’ll take it further: Who ever had their hand in agreeing to make this happens deserves to have their heads on a pike.

  42. Jesse Barron:

I had no idea this would be such a touchy subject!

It is a great textbook example of how marketing campaigns can blow up in your face.

I imagine this will make it into future editions of marketing books.

I am still loving the people that do not read. For instance, about me needing a job. Clearly they didn’t read my bio, or when I said that I am a business owner?

As for KFC having the right to say no because they had no idea it would be so big…

They could have put “limited to 100 free meals per day per restaurant.” Or “at participating restaurants, certain restrictions may apply.”

I am NOT going to take responsibility because YUM Brands appears to be full of marketing folks that didn’t take Marketing 101.

What amazes me is that there are people here that think I should take responsibility of YUM Brands irresponsibility.

FedEx says it best — under promise and over deliver. Don’t have Oprah say “we’re going to feed the country” and then back out of feeding the country.

  43. Jesse Barron:

    Evan,

Yes I do expect the most from someone who is working for minimum wage. I worked for minimum wage throughout high school and treated people no differently than I do now. I believe in the golden rule.

The customer could care less how much you hate your job. Chances are that the customer hates theirs, too.

  44. Jesse Barron:

Magicfan, unlike KFC you get a thumbs up!

I do not, however, need a car. I walk EVERYWHERE that is feasible. Otherwise, I drive. As a society we are too tied to our vehicles.

Get out and enjoy the fresh air. Walk places. It gives you a whole new perspective.

  45. Jesse Barron:

Hey Joe, thanks for the support!

People like you helped this blog make $72 in ad revenue yesterday!

I guess I can go buy me some chicken now, right? I am someone who doesn’t get off my sofa, even though I love walking when its not too far and my car can stay in my garage. Who owns a business, but somehow doesn’t work. Who bought dinner (for two of us, somewhere else) after the KFC fiasco but has to rely on free meals.

You sound very bitter. Here is an idea — unplug your computer, walk to your local KFC and enjoy some chicken on Oprah. Do you need me to send you a coupon?

I do not know your age, but according to your philosophies, you will not be collecting a dime of social security during your lifetime? Do not forget to tell anyone in your family that seeks out deals or clips coupons that you hate them.

You, my friend, are actually a poor money manager. A good money manager wants to keep as much of their money as possible. One of the many ways you can achieve that is to take advantage of any offers that will save you money.

  46. Jesse Barron:

    Duh,

I am not going to attempt the free chicken again. The experience left a bitter taste in my mouth (pun intended). I will, however, continue to call out irresponsible companies, including KFC. Popeyes is down the street from my local KFC and they will now have all of my chicken business.

Although I could probably get my local Popeyes to accept the coupon, I think they are a great chain and I am happy to give them my money. That, of course, is subject to change if they ever make a boneheaded move like KFC.

  47. big guz:

Your fuckin stupid DJ! What gives you the right to judge people because of the economy in witch the people you voted for robbed the us economy, so if a billion dollar company wants to give out free meals until the 19th they should be able to honor their agreement!!!
