More Twitter Love

If you don’t use Twitter, then you are probably tired of hear “Twitter.”  You hear about Twitter on the radio.  You read about Twitter in the papers.  You see them talk about Twitter on news shows.  Twitter on entertainment shows.  Twitter on talk shows.  Twitter, Twitter, Twitter, Twitter.  You may even be having Twitter nightmares.

(yes, I said Twitter an obnoxious number of times)

However, if you’ve spent more than two hours on Twitter, it is likely that you are hooked like the millions of us.

(side note: if you’ve tried and you “just don’t get Twitter,” it’s not you — keep using it — I signed up, couldn’t figure it out and walked away for a year before I figured it out)

If you’ve spent more than four hours on Twitter, you know that there is great debate on how they will monetize Twitter.  Debate on if they can monetize Twitter.  In case you didn’t know, Twitter, for all of its popularity, is paid for by venture capitalists.  It doesn’t take in any money.  100% free and not even ad supported.  If you are familiar with Twitter, API’s (definition and/or apps) and how most people tweet, you may be wondering how they can make money from it, too.

Well, by The Joy of Tech, via iJustine, here are some ideas:

monetize_twitter

Honestly, some of these ideas may be all that Twitter has going for it.

Oh, by the way, if you are not yet on Twitter, do yourself a favor and signup now.  :)  If anything, just so you’ll know what everybody is talking about … I promise you that Twitter is only going to get 10x bigger.  All jokes aside, it is a great and fun tool!

  1. John F:

Actually, here's a tidbit of useless knowledge. I believe that David Troy (founder of Toad.Net and resident of Severna Park) was one of the initial brains behind Twitter. I am like 90% I remember that correctly, but this was back in 2001, 2002 when he sold Toad.

And how will Twitter monetize itself, simple like all other good technology ideas, grow their database and eventually Google will buy them up in their quest to own the world.

  2. Jesse Barron:

    That sounds plausible.

Although I do not know too much about Twitter's history, this much I do know:

Evan, one of the co-founders of Twitter, was also one of the masterminds behind Blogger, which was eventually sold to Google. I believe Evan stayed on at Google for awhile and then left to do another startup.

The way he explains it, Twitter was almost an accident. In fact, it was a side-project in his new company — something they developed for the fun of it. Somehow, it went viral and here we are today.

I do wonder if someone like Google will make the move for it. Facebook tried to buy it for $500 million and were turned down. There is some bad blood there.

The reason why I wonder if another company will make a move for it is because of what's going on at Facebook. Mark Z. is now saying that it will take three more years to develop a feasible business plan. In other words, they have no idea how to make it into the cash cow it needs to be to cover their huge operating costs. If they knew how, they would already be doing it. Facebook is too large of an organization though — something like 600 employees, I've heard.

Twitter, on the other hand, is ran on a skeleton crew of 29 people. THAT is how a tech company needs to operate. If they can keep the overhead low enough, they may remain attractive to a larger company, even if they fail at monetization and it has to be ran as a loss leader. A lot of people now get their news from Twitter (relying on their friends to point them to the most interesting links) … which sounds right up Google's alley. Also, I know for a fact that the data sitting on Twitters servers is extremely valuable to the right company.

I guess the question is: who? Google, of course, is an obvious possibility because of the data. Who else though?

  25. Recliners:

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
