Green Tip of the Day: Reusable Shopping Bags

Shoppers Food Warehouse Reusable Grocery Bags

Shoppers Food Warehouse Reusable Grocery Bags

If you haven’t bought them already, I encourage you to invest in reusable shopping bags.

I will be the first to admit that it took me far too long to convert to them but it feels great now that I have.  They can be bought for as low as 89¢ a piece at some stores.

They are green, functional and stylish.  They keep from more plastic entering our recycling centers, or worse yet, landfills.  They are seemingly a million times more sturdy than plastic bags.  They are usually manufactured in trendy colors.  They fold flat when not being used, store flat and are very light.

The ones I use — Shoppers bags as shown on right — are even 100% recyclable.

Please buy reusable shopping bags the next time you go grocery shopping!  You will feel better.

I would like to add that initially, you may forget the bags at home … A LOT. Around the sixth trip though you should be no longer forgetting them! :)

  2. Joe Ferner:

If saving the environment wasn’t enough of a reason to bring your own bags, it is a growing trend in grocery stores to offer a small refund to the shopper each time you use a reusable bag. The refund is usually per bag used and can be anywhere from 2 or 3 cents to 10 cents. I know Whole Foods does this and I believe others do as well.

  15. Printed carrier bags:

Some bags use an Asian-made 1680 denier ballistic cloth that is of very mediocre quality (which is why it’s half the price of the standard 1050 denier ballistic). It seems to be made of a very heavy single yarn, one consequence of which is that it wears quite badly, and looks pretty ratty after even limited usage. It’s also 60% heavier than the good stuff. I would avoid luggage made from this material: it suggests that the manufacturer either favours low cost over quality, or has a poor understanding of fabrics.

This is a remarkable post, though sometimes I think I have to argue against your takes and thoughts on certain topics. On the other hand, I just can’t stop reading what you write because it is written so perfectly and straight to the point. It is good to know that some people actually take the time to think about the things they are blogging about. I have a piano related blog and if you are into playing piano it would be wonderful if you could check it out. I am just starting out and I could really use a couple instructions or pointers. Hopefully some day my site can be as great as yours and I will have people that actually leave comments. Anyway sorry for the lengthy response and I hope you continue to post on your blog unlike some people who just randomly stop. Thank you and I will be coming back again!
